• What is an Osage Apple?
The Hedge Apple Tree or "Maclura Pomifera" has 12 species
native to North America. There are several other species in tropical America and
Africa. The genus is named after William Maclure (1763–1840), an American
geologist, while the species epithet pomifera means bearing pomes or apples. The
tree itself is actually a member of the Mulberry (Moraceae) family.
The name "Osage" comes from the Osage Indian people originally from Missouri.
The apple (or orange or other fruit-like reference) comes from the spherical
fruit that the tree bears.
